Format for Interviews

Is this the best person to talk to?
Talking to the wrong people wastes energy and gives a false impression of the market. It is important to establish whether the person you are talking to has first-hand experience and whether they will buy the product?

Tony to consider how to reach 4-6 people in the right market? // At least half - new dentists (possibly 2 focus groups of 3?).

  • Hello and thank you for taking part in this session today.  My name is xxx and the aim of the session today is to find out more about how you market yourself, as a hygienist/dentist and about how you do aftercare. We also have some ideas that we would like to run past you. xxxxxxx [keep the description wide]
  • The session will last 30 minutes. [pilot first with someone for timings]
  • There are no right or wrong answers today.  The most important part is that you participate and think creatively.  We want to hear your thoughts and for you to help us develop some new ideas.
  • We will be video-recording/ recording / photographing parts of the session for research purposes only. We will also share this information with Business West who are working with us on this project.
  • Remember that what you see / hear today is confidential
  • Any questions before we start?

If anything confidential will be discussed, you may wish to ask the participant to sign a confidentiality agreement. It is your responsibility to ensure that the proper data protection is in place.

It is helpful to write interviews in the 2nd person in a natural tone of voice so that you are able to read the questions directly. The general principle is to ask an open-ended question and allow the person to answer, then to follow it with more specific questions to clarify why they think a certain way, for further detail or to check specific assumptions.

Background
For a realistic insight into how your customers think, it’s important to start with background questions before introducing concepts. If we introduce the product/ assumptions too early, we will bias the responses.

Dentist / Hygienist interview.
Name_______________________________ Date________________________________
  1. To start with, please can you introduce yourself with your name, occupation and a bit of background etc.
Probe: how long have they been a dentist/hygienist?
Probe: practice they work for?

2. What do you enjoy and what do you dislike about the job?

3. What does your routine tend to look like day-to-day?
Probe: times for admin / between patients - how do they use them?

Themes
Aim for a few good, open ended questions to keep the conversation on track.
Think about the emotions involved as well as the functional benefits.
Make sure that you ‘dig’ deep enough to uncover reasons why. (eg If they say that convenience is important to them, it’s important that you find out what that looks like for them.)

  1. How do you currently approach finding new patients?
Probe: Their priorities
Probe: tried anything different?
Probe: What works / what doesn’t?, Why?

  1. How do you currently approach retaining patients?  [THEME]?
Probe: Their priorities
Probe: tried anything different?
Probe: What works / what doesn’t?, Why?

4.   I’m interested to know which software / programs you currently use in your practice and how you find using them?
Probe: how do they find using them?
Probe: which programs contain the info that would need to be copied into the app?
Probe: do they already do any form of duplication?

5. Do you use Apps? Which do you like?
Why?
Colour response, ease of use?
Intuitive
yOur favourite Apps. Why?
Why do you use them,
Do you get notifications, reminders.
Which do you like, irritate.
Have you made any online booking.
Ever used your phone , FaceTime, photos for doctor?

Concepts- show possibilities

I’d like to share a few ideas with you for your feedback.
I’m interested in anything that would be really helpful to you day-to-day
I’m also interested in anything that would be inconvenient/ a barrier to using it?
Do these pictures help the patient understand

What if… show step by step images of how it works

Summary
  • Would you pay (give price brackets)?
  • (Sense check) Which budget would it come out of/ would you pay personally?
  • Would you consider working from home?
  • Any final thoughts?
  • Thank you for your time.

Questions  to be framed and order changed

The theme to the practice will be basing an application to support funding for an App to promote Oral cancer early diagnosis. If we get funding the content and the scoring for oral health can be verified and improved, but show most dentists are happy with is and show results, and explain previous surveys positive.
App is free download, free for all the dental team.
A minimal charge for dentists, as they advertise themselves more

Need to check what the Application for NHS funding needs.
Include future teledentistry and language
